Spotlight Athlete of the Week 10/10

Spotlight Athlete: Gavin Barraza
Gavin Barraza has been making plays on the field for a decade, and his dedication shows. A standout on the gridiron, Gavin was named 1st Team NWC Defensive Back, a testament to his skill, work ethic, and leadership. But his athletic talents don’t stop at football — he also competes in basketball and track, showcasing his versatility as a multi-sport athlete.
When asked what he enjoys most about football, Gavin says it’s spending time with the younger guys while he has the time to, showing that leadership and mentorship mean just as much to him as the game itself. His personal goal is to be a role model for the younger players, while his biggest team goal is to win a state title — something he and his teammates continue to chase with determination.
Outside of sports, Gavin keeps things real. His fun fact? He thinks Starbucks is gross! After high school, Gavin plans to enter the GROB apprenticeship program, where he’ll continue to build a bright future — both on and off the field.
Gavin Barraza exemplifies hard work, leadership, and humility — qualities that make him a true standout in every sense.
Spotlight Athlete: Lauren Martz
Determination and perseverance define Lauren Martz, a standout senior on the cross country team. Despite currently battling through an injury, Lauren has remained a consistent force for her team, serving as their solid 5th runner all season. This year marks her fourth varsity cross country letter, reflecting her dedication and steady performance over the years.
In addition to cross country, Lauren is involved in track and field, Leo Club, and the National Honor Society, balancing athletics with academics and leadership roles.
Lauren’s favorite part about cross country is the close bond she shares with her teammates. “It’s a great group of girls,” she says. “I’m happy to hopefully be a good senior leader.” Her personal goal is to bring her time down to the early 21s, while the team’s collective goal is to beat Lincolnview for the NWC conference title and qualify for state.
When she’s not training or racing, Lauren enjoys diamond painting — a relaxing creative hobby that shows her eye for detail and patience. After high school, she plans to attend Bowling Green State University and major in construction management, building a strong foundation for her future both in and out of the classroom.
Lauren Martz exemplifies resilience, teamwork, and leadership — the heart of what it means to be a true student-athlete.
